I have a confession.

I am a teenager and I have an obsession with my phone.

I am a teenager and I overuse social media.

As society is constantly changing, so is technology. Overall, social media has been developing for years and has affected teenagers more  specifically.

Teenagers are exposed to many different social media outlets. The popularity of Facebook seems to have died down among teens; and Instagram and Twitter have taken over.

“I don’t use Facebook anymore, only Twitter and Instagram,” sophomore Brooke Berner said.

As high school students, phones are very important in order to communicate and stay in the loop. It seems as if  parents are always telling teenagers: “get off your phones.”

“I’m always telling my daughter to keep her phone away from the dinner table so I can talk to her face to face.” Eleanor Holzer explained.

Phones and social media are a huge distraction in teenagers lives.

Senior Erik Crichton said, “I would have so much more homework done if phones and Twitter didn’t exist.” Ironically, Crichton used his phone to “tweet” this statement.

Many can argue that phones and social media are very convenient in busy lives today; a phone can take the place of a calculator, a calendar, and even a newspaper.

However, according to the website LiveScience, teens are so consumed with their phones that it can affect their sleep, and academic performance.

It is important to not rely completely on social media and phones. However, in this generation, phones and social media are never going to go away, they are just going to develop.
