Philadelphia is famous for many things, but one of its trademarks is the cheesesteak.

Tourists journey from every corner of the world to taste the famous sandwich.

Many people debate the best place to order a cheesesteak in the City of Brotherly Love. Everyone has a different opinion.

“My favorite cheesesteak place is Steve’s Prince of Steaks,” saidd Tori Deane, a senior at Archbishop Ryan.

Pat’s and Geno’s, located across from each other in South Philadelphia, are among the most popular establishments. However, many locals agree that both places are simply tourist traps.

“Pat’s and Geno’s are good, but the wait makes it not worth it. I’d rather just order from somewhere I don’t have to wait,” stated Brandon Kinney, a senior.

In an unscientific classroom poll regarding favorite cheesesteak places, these were the results:

  • Jim’s Steaks
  • Champ’s Pizzeria
  • Steve’s Prince of steaks
  • The FreshWork’s
  • Quig’s
  • Luca’s
  • Ishkabibble’s
  • Tony Luke’s
  • Geno’s
  • Wit or Witout

Wherever cheesesteaks are sold, beware of what locals say are signs of an inauthentic cheesesteak:

  • Calling it a Philly steak or Philly steak sandwich
  • Using Cheese Whiz or Swiss Cheese

Once people know what to avoid, they must learn the unspoken rules to ordering the sandwich like a Philadelphian:

  • Don’t call it a cheesesteak hoagie
  • To order onions on the steak, say simply: “Wit.” Don’t want onions? Say: “Witout.”

“You can always tell who tourists are when ordering cheesesteaks.” stated Lorette Thomas, a senior.
