Archbishop Ryan may seem like an ordinary high school but was once home to some very extraordinary individuals. An astronaut, a professional singer, professional athletes, and Pennsylvania Congressmen all walked through the halls of Archbishop Ryan as many do today.

From the class of 1970 to most recently the class of 2010, Archbishop Ryan generated at least 13 prominent individuals.

  •   Dennis O’Brien, class of 1970, was the 137th speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
  • Tom Filer, class of 1974, was a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Toronto Blue Jays for ten years.(1982-1992) Filer is now the pitching coach for the Altoona Curve.
  • Steve Farrell, class of 1978, was the bass player in the band Kid Dynamite.
  • Christopher Ferguson, class of 1979, was the pilot of NASA’s space shuttle Atlantis in September of 2006.
  • Ray Staszak, class of 1980, made history as the first Pennsylvanian to play in the NHL.
  • Chris McKendry, class of 1986, is an ESPN SportsCenter anchor.
  • Frank Wycheck, class of 1989, played in the NFL as a tight end where he was one of five tight ends to exceed 500 career interceptions. After his retirement, he became a color commentator on the Tennessee Titans Radio Network.
  • Chris Mooney, class of 1990, is  the Head Coach of the University of Richmond’s men’s basketball team.
  • Patrick Murphy, class of 1991, was the first Iraq War veteran in Congress. Murphy is a member of the United States House of Representatives.
  • Christina Perri, class of 2004, is a professional singer.
  • Joe Zeglinski, class of 2006, was a professional basketball player.
  • Steve Markel, class of 2010, is a professional pool player.

Here at Ryan, we are given the tools and opportunities to succeed, it is up to the students to figure out a way to use those tools and opportunities to their fullest capacity.

Whether a student yearns to excel onstage, on the field, in the lab, or simply in the classroom they are given support to go further and to do the best they possibly can. Archbishop Ryan is a school that not only molds prominent individuals, but also molds successful, respectful individuals in every aspect of ordinary life.

Archbishop Ryan has the potential to generate many more prominent individuals. Who knows, they could be walking the halls of the school today, or in years to come.
