For many teens, just showing up at a part-time job is a struggle, but for one unique student, Ryan Frech, arriving to work at Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Academy may be one of his favorite things.

Frech, a recently minted Archbishop Ryan graduate, began volunteering at Pegasus on Bustleton Avenue in Philadelphia during his sophomore year for service hours.

“I always wanted to work with horses,” stated Frech.

He completed his 20 hours and he decided to stay after being offered a job. Ryan is a barn assistant, which means he feeds the horses, cleans out the stalls, and prepares the horses for lessons.

As stated on its website, “Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing therapeutic horseback riding programs and equine-assisted activities and therapies for children and adults with physical, developmental, and intellectual disabilities. Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Academy seeks to improve the quality of life for our program participants and their families.”

Pegasus has been assisting disabled children since 1982.

“The best part about going to work is working with the horses and getting to help people with disabilities,”stated Frech.

Ryan is an academically excelling student with a few scholarships under his belt.

He will be furthering his education at Delaware Valley University, majoring in Equine Science and Management.

While getting his hands dirty at the barn, back at school Frech was also co-president of Ambassadors Club alongside Jessica Baranoski.

His friend, fellow ambassador, and future classmate at DelVal Brittany Rice stated,”Frech is a committed and confident leader; he does he absolute best to make sure everything is well organized. He takes care of his peers before his own needs.”

That is also true at work.

“Ryan is dedicated to both riders and the horses at Pegasus,” said Haley Flagg, assistant program director and volunteer coordinator at Pegasus. “His hard work has driven him to become an assistant instructor and a great exercise rider. His way with the horses is innate and wonderful to watch. There’s not a horse in the barn he doesn’t get along with. The riders he works with have such an affliction for him. They ask, “Where’s Ryan?” before their lesson begins. He truly makes a difference at Pegasus, and has become a devoted volunteer and employee in addition to my dear friend.”
