Ten years. Ten long years without anything major from American rock band Dashboard Confessional, who’s last major album was After the Ending in 2008. Dashboard Confessional is an acoustic rock band formed in 1999. In the early 2000’s, lead singer Chris Carrabba was called the “icon” , “breakout star”, and “poster boy” of the emo genre. In 2017, the wait was finally ended. In an interview on October 6, 2017, lead singer Chris Carrabba announced the band’s seventh studio album was in the works. On November 15, 2017, they announced the name of the album, Crooked Shadows, and the release date, February 9, 2018. In addition, they released the album’s lead single, We Fight. In the days up to the album, other songs were released as well.

As a follow up to After the Ending, this fits in perfectly.  It builds on that Album in all the best way, and feels very multidimensional. Lyric-wise, the songs are inspirational, though bubble gum at some points. The aforementioned We Fight was a great anthem, for all those people out there who needed to stand up. Some of the better aspects of his early writing may have been lost, but this album is still up there with the best of them. The evolution of the angsty Swiss Army Romance to today is visible. Even taking recency bias into account, the songs are very bombastic, energetic, and are recommended for anyone in a Dashboard fix.
